Participants will initially be asked to attend up to 5 sessions of testing that will take up to 3 hours each session.
**Before each participant comes in for their first session, they will complete a health history questionnaire and phone screening to check that they are eligible for the study. Testing sessions will be at least 48 hours, and up to 1 week apart.
Testing sessions may include the following:
Informed consent.
Questionnaires pertaining to fatigue, depression, sleep, physical activity and health quality of life.
DXA body composition scan at the School of Kinesiology.
Blood pressure measurement.
A venous blood draw to measure hormone levels.
Functional daily performance tests.
Submaximal cycle aerobic fitness test accompanied with a 12 lead ECG.
Ultrasound measurements of muscle/tendon size and blood flow.
Cortical brain stimulation at rest and during brief contractions of the thigh muscles.
Maximal strength testing of the thigh muscles.
Muscle stimulation of the thigh muscles.
Muscle activity recordings.
Fatiguing exercise of the thigh muscles while seated.

Participants who are interested and qualify, will also be able to participate in a supervised strength training exercise program of up to 8 weeks (up to 3 times/week) in the laboratory and training rooms in the School of Kinesiology. Participants will be asked to attend additional experimental testing sessions after the exercise training program as well as receive magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans of their legs before and after training to measure the size of their leg muscles.
Training will include:
Dynamic warmup.
One repetition maximum testing.
Resistance training with the leg muscles.
Upper body exercises.
Cool down.
